Week 09 has ended and a lot of interesting things happened throughout this period. Google Meet is here and we can see what can we benefit from it. At the same time, social media giants are introducing new features. Facebook has some really innovative changes for users. Pinterest allows us to see behind the scenes and the trends that occurred in 2020.

1. Part of Google Workspace: A Google Meet Insight

Google Workspace (formerly Google G Suite) now offers Google Meet as well. The mid-level subscription tier supports 150 meeting participants and an unlimited number of meetings with a maximum of 24 hours per meeting, which is a good set of capabilities for a standard small to midsized enterprise (SMB). Apart from the Google Chrome browser, which we probably all have, there are no bloated applications to download, and it works on Windows & iOS too. It also has a strong set of communication tools, so it’s a near second to the current Editors’ Choice online conferencing winners, Cisco Webex for larger businesses, Intermedia AnyMeeting and Zoom Meetings for smaller businesses.

Deets and Position of Google Workspace

Since a major part of Google Meet’s strength is how tightly it interacts with the other resources in the suite, the best is to use it via Google Workspace if you want to get the most out of it. Though Google Workspace isn’t the cheapest office suite we’ve looked at, its costs are still reasonable. This basic tier includes 100-person video meetings (no recordings) and 30GB of storage space for files generated with the other Workspace apps per user. That’s great, but the Business Standard tier has the functionality that the majority of small businesses would need. The Business Plus and Enterprise tiers are at the top of the scale. With that, you’ll also be able to hold video meetings with up to 250 people, with the ability to record and monitor attendance. Since the Enterprise tier’s pricing isn’t straightforward, you’ll have to strike a custom deal with Google. This tier, on the other hand, comes with all the bells and whistles, including high-end data and endpoint protection, as well as in-domain live streaming and noise cancellation for conferencing.

When compared to its direct competition, namely other cloud-service productivity suites, such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace performs admirably in terms of price. If you’re looking for a conferencing-only solution, Google offers Editors’ Choice-winner Zoom Meetings or Zoho Meeting on the low end.

Getting Started With Google Meet

A favourable feature is that Google Meet doesn’t require any client installation. If you don’t want the full Workspace experience, you can simply navigate to the Google Meet page and click “Start a Meeting.” From there, you can copy the invite link and send it to anyone else that needs to join, and then conduct your meeting through the browser experience. Note that Google Chrome provides the best experience, but Google Meet will operate in other browsers as well, though the mileage can vary.

You have a few options for starting a meeting if you have Workspace. One option is to use Google Calendar to invite a group of people. When you click to add a meeting, you can choose to include Google Meet in the invitation. All else works as expected: the meeting is set up automatically at the specified time, and all invitees receive an email with a connection to it.

To use Google Meet on a smartphone, you’ll need to download and install the mobile software. Both Apple iOS and Google Android have dedicated apps available.

Presenting and Collaborating With Jamboard

You can share a window, a tab, or your entire screen with this feature. When presentation mode is enabled, all video windows are moved to the right or bottom of the conferencing interface, depending on the mode. The fact that screen sharing isn’t tied to the whiteboarding feature is one of the more unique aspects of it. Google Meet, unlike other solutions such as LogMeIn’s GoToMeeting, does not allow for direct screen annotation. Instead, it employs a different browser application known as a Jamboard.

This includes all of the standard web whiteboarding functionality, such as collaborative file editing, notes, and annotations. The ability to give another user control of your mouse and keyboard is one feature that screen sharing lacks. Although Google provides a separate app called Chrome Remote Desktop for this, it was surprising not to see it natively in Meet, as other apps, such as Webex, do, which is far more convenient.

2. Facebook & Instagram Feature Updates

2021 will undoubtedly be the year that various social media channels take the world by storm. People have seen these various social media apps come up with the best of features and updates for their users to help them, particularly after the pandemic hit us last year. We saw many small businesses come in as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the opportunity that these businesses were able to be present goes to these social media sites as well, because these social media apps came up with features and improvements that gave these small businesses a motivational boost and a helping hand.

Quiet Mode and Post scheduling.

We all need a break from our phones now and then, but with alerts continuously coming in, it’s difficult to do so. Facebook has addressed this issue by introducing ‘Quiet Mode,’ which allows users to disable or mute notifications from the app. Users may, of course, re-enable notifications. This significantly reduces screen time. We all lead very hectic and busy lives; on social media sites, we sometimes come across posts that are relevant to our interests, but because we are in a rush, we don’t have time to properly view them, or we forget where we saw that post entirely. According to Mat Williams and Matt Navarra, Facebook is now rolling out a new feature that allows users to schedule certain posts at times that are convenient for them and display them without having to rush.

This will undoubtedly bring relief to many people, and this feature by Facebook is yet another way of the app letting us know that they are aware of our minor concerns and are ready to help.

Facebook updates Instagram as well.

Starting in 2021, you’ll be able to start a video chat with more than two people on Instagram. Up to four users will now be in a live stream at the same time, instead of the previous two. You simply need to build a live room and invite others to join. The functionality will be available in the near future all over the world. Facebook, based on United States, has introduced a new feature for the Instagram social networking app. Up to four people can watch a live stream at the same time in a live space. Previously, each live stream could only accommodate two people.

Instagram, like any other social media platform, has a chat feature for its users. Instagram Direct is the name of the service, which was previously available as a standalone app. The chat has been re-integrated into the Instagram app, and it now includes a video chat and group chat feature. Instagram allows you to video chat not only with one person but also with a group of people. However, this is only possible in an existing group chat. No additional caller can be added during a call.

3. Pinterest Details New Research & Features

Pinterest is here to inspire.

Pinterest Presents global advertiser summit featured sessions in six countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In the event opener, co-founder and CEO Ben Silbermann said that he talks with a lot of chief marketing officers and that they got into marketing to inspire people, not to bid on keywords or retarget people all over the internet.

“As an advertiser, there are lots of places where you can spend your energy,” he added. “Why not spend it where people go to plan?”

Pinterest users are now watching just under 1 billion videos every day, and the number of videos posted to the site has increased by 800 percent year over year.

According to the company, the number of boards produced globally doubled in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the same time the previous year, with categories such as beauty, home décor, and women’s fashion.
